The usual, slightly altered.
Table seven asks for the usual. The kitchen sends noodles, mushrooms, scallions, a red bowl, and a Moon. Nobody says anything for a moment. The server checks the order twice, then points out that the egg was always supposed to be soft.
Outside, rain turns the neon into a much larger sign than the diner can afford. Inside, the broth steams around a cratered surface that seems remarkably comfortable with its new circumstances.
One more game.
The customer at table seven is wearing the same bowl on a black tee. This makes the situation either less surprising or considerably more suspicious. At the back of the room, a pinball machine offers an orbit for one coin. A vending machine has been humming in a key nobody recognizes.
The server returns with chopsticks. The customer asks whether the Moon is extra. The server says everything after midnight is extra, but the bill is still being worked out.
Closing time, approximately.
Eventually the rain stops. The lights stay on. Table seven takes the long way home with dinner on their shirt and one last bright reflection in the window. The sky has its Moon back, or possibly another one. Nobody at the diner is interested in resolving this immediately.
An original fictional scene for Midnight Objects. Order whichever question you want to carry out.
